Cooinda Aged Care

Cooinda Aged Care Service (Cooinda) located in Gympie, Queensland, is a community owned and operated aged-care provider. Established in 1965, the service has 164 residents and 250 staff. It has a strong reputation and is highly valued by the community of Gympie.

However, the Cooinda service like many standalone aged care operators in rural and regional Australia due to several factors were finding it difficult to operate sustainability.

In 2022, the Chairman of the Cooinda Management Committee approached Community Business Australia (CBA) to review its position and consider several strategic options. After several meeting of ‘frank and fearless’ discussions, the Cooinda Aged Care Management Committee decided to explore a possible merger by a larger organisation. The committee engaged CBA to guide the process.

CBA project managed the merger process and helped Cooinda select Lutheran Services as the new provider of aged care services.

Requirements

  • To search for and find a new provider with shared values and committed to regional service provision
  • To project manage the transition process with a Steering Committee
  • To analyse the expressions of interest with Management Committee at Cooinda
  • To help oversee the transition of ownership of the facility
  • To manage HR requirements with existing and new staff
  • To provide experienced consultants in aged care management and HR to assist with the transition to new owners
  • To bring the project to a successful conclusion.

Results

  • New Steering Committee formed to work closely with Cooinda Management Committee
  • A thorough search for new provider undertaken
  • Six potential providers submitted Expressions of Interest
  • Potential providers vetted
  • Lutheran Services selected by the management committee
  • A successful transition of ownership and operations completed
  • Financial, logistical and care security achieved for Cooinda’s 164 residents.

“Working with Community Business Australia has been a delight. The project has concluded very successfully with the ownership of the facility being transferred to Lutheran Services. We know and trust Lutheran Services and are really happy with the decision. Everyone is very pleased with the progress we’ve made and the fact that the facility will be able to continue and grow under Lutheran Services.”

Paul Medway, Chairman of the Cooinda Management Committee.
